Learning to Appreciate Ugly Uniforms

On the whole, hockey players are known to be a globetrotting bunch, but this season's circumstances have seen more familiar faces dispatched to foreign lands than ever before. Here's where some of your favorite players are cutting ice this winter.

Players participating in this season's European exodus would be wise to pack several key items: warm clothing, a Berlitz language tape, some reading material for those extra days off and, most importantly, extremely dark sunglasses to help obscure the view of their own uniform.

Yes, the money may be decent and the scenery spectacular, but many European unis are nothing short of hideous, head-to-toe billboards. While goalie Marc Lamothe is dapper as always in his Yaroslavl Locomotiv duds, check out the victims of marketing that Jiri Hudler (left) and Stacy Roest have become.

Regardless of their attire, many Griffins are enjoying fine seasons overseas, from players like Roest and Lamothe who committed long before for the NHL's squabbles, to Pavol Demitra, who's just looking to pay the mortgage on his Dukla Trencin salary.

At last check, here are the foreign locales where notable former Griffins have found themselves this season:
