WINGS TRADE SPROUL, ASSIGN PUEMPEL TO GRIFFINS

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Saturday traded defenseman Ryan Sproul to the New York Rangers in exchange for left wing Matt Puempel, who was then assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Puempel, 24, has logged three points (1-2—3) in five games with the Hartford Wolf Pack this season.

Puempel has skated in 175 AHL contests since 2011-12 between the Binghamton Senators and Hartford, compiling 114 points (61-53—114) and 142 PIM.

He was named OHL Rookie of the Year and to the Canadian Major Junior All-Rookie Team in 2010 after leading all first-year OHL skaters with 64 points (33-31—64) in 59 games.
