GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Sunday recalled center Andreas Athanasiou from the Grand Rapids Griffins. In addition, the Griffins have assigned center Alden Hirschfeld to the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye.

Detroit’s fourth choice (110th overall) in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Athanasiou has notched one goal and one assist in eight games with the Griffins this season. In his first full season with Grand Rapids during 2014-15, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound center earned 32 points (16-16—32), 25 penalty minutes and a plus-17 rating in 55 regular season games, ranking among team leaders in goals (4th), plus/minus (T6th) and shooting percentage (13.7%, 5th).

Athanasiou, 21, also tied for fifth in scoring on the Griffins during the 2015 Calder Cup Playoffs with five goals and four assists in 16 games.

The 27-year-old Hirschfeld has suited up in eight games with the Walleye this season, tallying five points (3-2—5) and two penalty minutes. The 6-foot, 203-pound forward strung together a three-game point streak from Oct. 17-24, including a three-point game (2-1—3) at Kalamazoo on Oct. 23. Hirschfeld spent a majority of last season with Toledo and ranked sixth on the team in scoring with 44 points (11-33—44) in 58 games, along with 21 penalty minutes and a plus-15 rating.

Hirschfeld also spent parts of the last two seasons with Grand Rapids, notching a goal and an assist in each of his campaigns with the team through a total of 25 games. He played in six games with the Griffins during the 2015 Calder Cup Playoffs and scored the series-clinching goal against the Toronto Marlies in Game 5 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals.

The Griffins will square off against the Iowa Wild on Wednesday at Van Andel Arena at 7 p.m.
