SPROUL RE-SIGNED

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Friday re-signed defenseman Ryan Sproul to a two-year contract.

Sproul, 23, turned in a career year during the 2015-16 season with the Grand Rapids Griffins. In 75 games, he tallied personal bests in goals (12), assists (23) and points (35) while placing second among Griffins defensemen in scoring. Sproul proved a contributor to the power play, tying for second on the team with seven power play goals and placing third with eight power play assists.

Skating in all nine Calder Cup Playoff games, Sproul led team defensemen and ranked second overall in scoring with nine points (2-7—9).

Detroit’s third choice (55th overall) in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, Sproul joined the Griffins for two games at the end of the 2012-13 season. In his Grand Rapids career, the 6-foot-3, 205-pound blueliner has contributed 91 points (28-63—91) and 99 penalty minutes in 215 regular season games while chipping in 14 points (4-10—14) in 24 postseason contests. Sproul is tied for fifth in franchise history with a pair of overtime goals.

The Mississauga, Ontario, native also logged one game with the Red Wings on April 13, 2014.

Prior to turning professional, Sproul played three seasons (2010-13) for Sault Ste. Marie (OHL) and accumulated 153 points (57-96—153) in 170 games. He was the league’s highest scoring defenseman in 2012-13 after scoring 66 points (20-46—66) in 50 games.

The Griffins will open the 2016-17 campaign at home against the Chicago Wolves on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. before traveling to Chicago and battling the Wolves on Oct. 15.
