SPROUL CALLED ON BY DETROIT

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday recalled defenseman Ryan Sproul from the Grand Rapids Griffins.

In his first professional season, Sproul, 21, has made 53 appearances with Grand Rapids, earning 24 points (8-16—24), 32 penalty minutes and a plus-five rating. Prior to joining the Griffins, Sproul recorded 149 points (54-95—149) and 134 PIM in 170 career games with the OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds from 2010-13.

Detroit’s third choice (55th overall) in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, Sproul led OHL defensemen and finished second on the Greyhounds in 2012-13 with 66 points (20-46—66) en route to capturing CHL Defenseman of the Year honors. In the same season, the 6-foot-4, 200-pound blueliner won the Max Kaminsky Trophy for OHL Defenseman of the Year and was named to the First All-Star Team.

The Red Wings will return to action away from home on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. against the Montreal Canadiens, when Sproul could make his NHL debut and become the 141st Griffins alumnus to play in the NHL.

The Griffins will hit the road this week for a rematch against the Milwaukee Admirals on Wednesday at 8 p.m. EST before consecutive games against the Abbotsford Heat on Friday and Saturday at 10 p.m. EST.
