SHEAHAN HEADING TO MOTOWN

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Thursday signed Grand Rapids Griffins center Riley Sheahan to a three-year, entry-level contract. Additionally, the Griffins released Sheahan and defensemen Richard Nedomlel and Ryan Sproul from their amateur tryouts.

Sheahan, 20, was originally selected by Detroit in the first round (21st overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. A native of St. Catharines, Ontario, he suited up in seven games for the Griffins after being signed to an amateur tryout on March 20. The 6-2, 212-pound center tallied two points (1-1—2), which both came against Oklahoma City in the Griffins’ 6-2 win over the Western Conference-leading Barons last Saturday. Prior to joining Grand Rapids, Sheahan recorded 25 points (9-16—25) in 37 games with the University of Notre Dame and also earned a nomination for the CCHA’s Best Defensive Forward award.

Sproul and Nedomlel joined the Griffins on tryouts last week, but neither saw game action. The 19-year-old Sproul led all OHL defensemen with 20 goals alongside his 50 points (20-30—50) in 59 games with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds this season. Nedomlel, 18, skated in 72 games for the WHL’s Swift Current Broncos, recording 46 points (10-36—46) and 83 penalty minutes.

Sitting just four points out of a playoff spot, the Griffins will be in action this weekend with a home-and-home set against the North Division-leading Toronto Marlies in Grand Rapids on Friday at 7 p.m. and in Toronto on Saturday at 3 p.m. Tickets are available at griffinshockey.com.
