RED WINGS RE-SIGN MIELE AND McCOLLUM

The Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday re-signed forward Andy Miele and goaltender Tom McCollum to one-year contracts.

Miele, 27, ranked first on the Griffins in scoring and second overall in the AHL during the 2014-15 regular season with 70 points (26-44—70) in 71 games. The Detroit, Mich., native also ranked among Grand Rapids leaders with 26 goals (3rd), 44 assists (1st), eight power play goals (2nd), 16 power play assists (1st), five game-winning goals (T2nd), a 0.750 shootout percentage (1st) and a 17.9 shooting percentage (3rd). During the 2015 Calder Cup Playoffs, he placed second on the team in scoring with 14 points (3-11—14) in 16 games.

The 5-foot-8, 175-pound center recorded 22 multi-point performances last season, most notably registering a goal and four assists on Dec. 19 versus Toronto, and was named to the AHL First All-Star Team in April. Miele’s achievement marked the second consecutive season in which he received honors from the AHL, as he was a member of the Second All-Star Team in 2013-14 after accumulating 72 points (27-45—72) in 70 games with the Pirates.

In 280 career AHL games with the Griffins and Portland Pirates, Miele has registered 249 points (88-161-249) and 223 penalty minutes. He also skated in 15 career NHL games with the Phoenix Coyotes from 2011-14, picking up two assists and 11 PIM.

Prior to turning pro, Miele enjoyed a standout career at Miami University from 2007-11 and, during his freshman year, served under former RedHawks assistant coach and current Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill. In all, Miele notched 160 points (60-100—160) and 134 PIM in 141 games during his collegiate career, capping it off by leading the nation in scoring with 71 points (24-41—71) as a senior and earning the 2011 Hobey Baker Award as the top player in college hockey.

A seventh-year pro and a Griffins mainstay since the 2009-10 season, McCollum makes his return to Grand Rapids after posting a 19-11-6 record, a 2.40 goals against average and a 0.916 save percentage during the 2014-15 campaign. This past season, the Cambria, N.Y., native helped backstop the Griffins to their second Midwest Division Title in three seasons, as well as to an appearance in the Western Conference Finals versus the Utica Comets. In 15 games during the 2015 Calder Cup Playoffs, McCollum produced a 9-6 record, a 2.55 GAA and a 0.916 save percentage. Through six seasons with Grand Rapids, McCollum sports an 88-78-16 record in 196 games played.

Detroit’s first choice (30th overall) in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, McCollum appeared in two games with the Wings last season, producing a 0.91 GAA and a 0.960 save percentage. On Jan. 18 versus Buffalo, the 25-year-old McCollum earned his first NHL victory with seven saves in a relief effort, and he also blocked all 17 shots he faced in a third-period relief effort at Tampa Bay on Jan. 29.

In addition to his on-ice duties, McCollum was named the Griffins’ 2014-15 IOA/American Specialty Man of the Year for his contributions to the Grand Rapids community, the second consecutive season in which he earned the honor.
