GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Sunday assigned forward Anthony Mantha to the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Mantha became the 154th Griffins alumnus to play in the NHL when he debuted with the Red Wings during their 4-3 loss at Philadelphia on March 15.

Recalled on March 14, Mantha suited up in 10 games for the Red Wings and recorded three points (2-1—3), two penalty minutes and 18 shots. His first NHL goal came in game-winning fashion, helping Detroit to a 4-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on March 24.

Detroit’s first choice (20th overall) in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, Mantha has played in 56 games for the Griffins this season, ranking fourth on the team in points (45), third in goals (21) and sixth in assists (24) while also posting a plus-18 rating and 30 penalty minutes. Mantha, 21, recorded his first career hat trick and added an assist for a four-point night in a 4-1 victory against Milwaukee on Feb. 17. He has netted goals in his last three AHL games, registering six points (3-3—6) during that stretch.

In his second season as a professional, the Longueuil, Quebec, native has played in 118 AHL games, all with Grand Rapids. In the 2014-15 campaign, Mantha finished ninth among Griffins scorers with 33 points (15-18—33) and added two goals and two assists (2-2—4) in 16 games during the 2015 Calder Cup Playoffs.

Prior to turning professional, Mantha played for Val d’Or (QMJHL) from 2010-14, and racked up 260 points (129-131) in 189 games. In 2013-14, he was named the league’s Most Valuable Player as he paced the league in goals (57) and points (120).

The Red Wings are headed to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the 25th consecutive season and will play the Tampa Bay Lightning in the opening round.

The playoff-bound Griffins have four games remaining in the regular season and will travel to Iowa to face off against the Wild on Monday at 8 p.m. EDT.
