GRIFFINS YOUTH FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES TWO COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Griffins Youth Foundation on Monday announced the winners of two $5,000 college scholarships that are awarded annually to past program participants.
Ann Hardin of Grandville and Scout McCurdy of Grand Rapids will receive $2,500 for each of their first two years of college, with eligibility for the second $2,500 installment dependent on achieving a minimum 3.0 GPA during their freshman year. The scholarships are made possible through a grant from the Daniel and Pamella DeVos Foundation.
“Congratulations to Ann and Scout for this great accomplishment,” said Bob Kaser, president of the Griffins Youth Foundation. “We have always been so proud of the achievements of our kids on the ice, and thanks to Dan and Pam that pride extends into the classroom. The recent enhancements and subsequent acceleration of our educational offerings is a vital component to making sure our kids, every day, understand and apply the important balance of athletics and academics.”
Hardin, a graduate of Grandville High School with a 4.142 GPA, will enter Northwood University this fall with a double major in economics and business management. McCurdy, who graduated from Creston High School with a 3.02 GPA, is preparing to begin her studies in elementary education at Grand Rapids Community College. Both young ladies played in the foundation through the 10th grade and volunteered in various capacities for the duration of their high school years.
To be eligible for one of the scholarships, high school seniors who have been active participants in the foundation must have accumulated at least 100 volunteer hours in service to the foundation since the eighth grade; graduated high school with a minimum 3.0 GPA; received a minimum score of 18 on the ACT; submitted a 500-word essay discussing how the foundation assisted their academic progress and how they plan to continue volunteering in the community; and provided a letter of recommendation from a teacher, clergy member or other community leader.
