GRIFFINS WIN FOURTH STRAIGHT

GRAND RAPIDS GRIFFINS 3 at Milwaukee Admirals 0

Jan. 30, 2015

MILWAUKEE
– Grand Rapids snapped Milwaukee’s nine-game winning streak behind 28 saves from Jared Coreau as the Griffins topped the Admirals 3-0 Friday at BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Coreau’s third shutout of the season and second consecutive shutout made Coreau the seventh goaltender in Griffins history to record a shutout in consecutive games. The last goalie to accomplish that feat was Daniel Larsson in 2008-2009.

The opening goal of the night came from Mitch Callahan 10 seconds after Teemu Pulkkinen served a penalty for tripping. The duo had a two-on-one rush toward Milwaukee goalie Magnus Hellberg when Callahan had the final touch with a snap to score his 16th goal of the season at 9:53 of the first period.

Grand Rapids (23-16-3-1) doubled its lead at 17:32 when Landon Ferraro followed up a shot from Nathan Paetsch scored his 19th goal of the season off the rebound.

The final goal of the night came courtesy of Mark Zengerle at 2:41 of the second period. Tomas Nosek drove toward Hellberg shot the puck under Hellberg’s pads. As Hellberg spun around the puck squirted toward the slot where Zengerle was there to poker his sixth goal of the campaign into the open net.

Both teams failed to score on four power play opportunities, but Milwaukee (24-13-2-3) had its best chance in the third period when Colton Sissons fired a wrister from between the circles over Coreau’s glove but flashed the leather to make the save.

Hellberg made 18 saves on 21 shots in the loss. Coreau is 13:26 away from having the Griffins’ regular season shutout record. Mark Lamothe’s shutout streak of 153:58 from 11/7/02-11/16/02 is the record and Coreau’s streak stands at 140:32.

The Griffins will try to extend their winning streak to five when both teams meet the second of a home-and-home set Saturday at 7 pm from Van Andel Arena.

Note: Coreau joined Lamothe as the only goalies in franchise history to record a shutout in consecutive road games. Lamothe recorded road shutouts from 11/26/03-11/30/03.

Three Stars: 1. GR Coreau (W, 28 saves, SO); 2. GR Callahan (game-winning goal); 3. GR Zengerle (goal)
