GRIFFINS TO HOST RYAN FISCHER LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP HOCKEY CLASSIC

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Griffins will host the Ryan Fischer Legacy Scholarship Hockey Classic between the Grandville Bulldogs and Detroit Catholic Central Shamrocks at Van Andel Arena on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 1:30 p.m.

Following Fischer’s unexpected passing on March 7, 2014, Grandville and Detroit Catholic Central faced each other in a Division 1 state semifinal game that same evening as scheduled, per the wishes of the Fischer family and Grandville High School. As the final seconds ticked away in a 3-0 Detroit Catholic Central victory at Compuware Arena, Bulldogs fans stood and raised their hands with pointed index fingers, a tribute to the #11 that Fischer wore.

At the conclusion of the game, the Grandville players and coaches, emotionally drained from the events of the day, surrounded their net, and they were joined in the huddle by Detroit Catholic Central in a remarkable show of support and an unforgettable memoriam for their co-captain.

The rematch at Van Andel Arena will be broadcast live on WOOD 106.9 FM, with the pre-game show beginning at 1:05 p.m., and Griffins broadcaster Bob Kaser will provide the call alongside color commentator and WOOD TV8 anchor Larry Figurski. Figurski has ties to both the Bulldogs and Shamrocks, as he is a resident of Grandville and a high school graduate of Detroit Catholic Central.

Following the high school game, the Griffins will host the Rochester Americans at 7 p.m.

Tickets for the event are on sale for $15 at griffinshockey.com/promocode, where fans can enter the promo code “FISCHER” to take advantage of the offer. Tickets will grant entry to both the high school game and the Griffins’ showdown with the Americans later that evening. A portion of the proceeds from each ticket purchased will be donated to the scholarship fund.
