GRIFFINS RE-SIGN ZENGERLE

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Griffins on Wednesday re-signed right wing Mark Zengerle to a one-year contract for the 2015-16 season. In addition, the Griffins have assigned center Alden Hirschfeld to the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye and released center Dominic Turgeon from his amateur tryout.

In his first professional season with the Griffins, Zengerle, 26, ranked seventh on the team in scoring and led all Grand Rapids rookies with 37 points (15-22—37) in 72 games, while totaling eight penalty minutes and a plus-17 rating. Appearing in all 10 playoff games for Grand Rapids so far, Zengerle has picked up eight assists and ranks fourth on the team in playoff scoring.

Prior to turning pro, Zengerle amassed 162 points (37-125—162) in 151 games with the University of Wisconsin Badgers from 2010-14. Last season, the 5-foot-10, 185-pound forward paced the Badgers with 44 points (10-34—44), leading the team in both scoring and assists. Zengerle was named the Big Ten tournament’s Most Outstanding Player in March 2014, after scoring the game-winning overtime goal to give Wisconsin the inaugural Big Ten tournament title.

A native of Dallas, Texas, Hirschfeld spent a majority of the season with Toledo, ranking sixth on the team in scoring with 44 points (11-33—44), 21 PIM and a plus-15 rating in 59 regular season games. The 27-year-old also appeared in 12 games with the Griffins this season, tallying a goal, an assist and 10 PIM. In six playoff games with Grand Rapids, the 6-foot, 203-pound center scored the series-clinching goal against the Toronto Marlies on May 3. He has also appeared in two playoff games with the Walleye.

Detroit’s third-round draft pick (63rd overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, Turgeon picked up 43 points (18-25—43), 36 PIM and a plus-14 rating in 67 regular season games with the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks this season. In nine playoff games with Portland, the Pointe-Claire, Quebec, native potted eight goals and one assist in 17 games, before his team was knocked out by the Kelowna Rockets in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals. In all, Turgeon owns 82 points (31-51—82), 69 PIM and a plus-30 rating in 187 career games.

After defeating the Rockford IceHogs 4-1 in the Western Conference Semifinals, the second-seeded Griffins will face either the Utica Comets or Oklahoma City Barons in the conference finals, based on the winner of tonight’s game at the Utica Memorial Auditorium at 7 p.m.

Down 0-2 in their Eastern Conference Finals series against the South Carolina Stingrays, the Walleye will attempt a rally in Game 3 tonight at 7:05 p.m. at the North Charleston Coliseum.
