GRIFFINS BEGIN TRAINING CAMP MONDAY

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Griffins, comprised of both returning players and camp invitees, will kick off training camp on Monday at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids.

The Detroit Red Wings on Saturday assigned forward Marek Tvrdon and goaltenders Jared Coreau and Jake Paterson to Grand Rapids and also released forward Tyler Barnes and defensemen Brennan Evans and Nathan Paetsch from their tryouts, returning them to the Griffins in time for training camp.

This group will be joined by 12 others – forwards Chris Bruton, Josh Holmstrom, Anthony Luciani, Justin Mercier, Tom Serratore and Jerome Verrier plus defensemen Kevin Clare, Scott Czarnowczan, Tyler Elbrecht, Corey Fienhage, Joe Houk and Shane Sims – on the Griffins' roster when they open training camp tomorrow. The schedule of practices is as follows (subject to change):

Monday, Sept. 29: 11 a.m.-Noon and 12:10-12:40 p.m.;
Tuesday, Sept 30: 10:15-11:15 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m.;
Wednesday, Oct. 1: 10:15-11:15 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m.;
Thursday, Oct. 2: 10:15-11:15 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m.;
Friday, Oct. 3: 10:30-11:30 a.m.

The Griffins will conclude camp with a pair of neutral-site preseason games against the Lake Erie Monsters next weekend. Grand Rapids will first battle the Monsters on Friday, Oct. 3 at 7:05 p.m. at the WFCU Centre in Windsor, Ontario, before squaring off again on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Grand Rapids will commence the AHL’s regular season with a spar against the Monsters on Fri. Oct. 10 at Van Andel Arena, kicking off its 19th campaign overall, 14th as members of the American Hockey League and 13th as the primary affiliate of the Red Wings.
