DETROIT ASSIGNS SAMUELSSON
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Sunday assigned right wing Mikael Samuelsson to the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Samuelsson, 37, has notched three points (1-2—3) and six penalty minutes in 26 appearances with the Wings this season. Drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft (145th overall), the 6-foot-2, 218-pound right wing was signed as a free agent by Detroit most recently on July 1, 2012. In six total seasons with Detroit, Samuelsson has produced 163 points (68-95—163) and 152 PIM from 2005-09 and 2012-14. With an NHL career spanning 12 years, Samuelsson has tallied 346 points (149-197—346) and 370 PIM in 699 games.
A native of Mariefred, Sweden, Samuelsson won the Stanley Cup with Detroit in 2008 and, along with winning an Olympic gold medal and a World Championship gold medal in 2006 with Sweden, he qualifies as a member of the ‘Triple Gold Club’.
The Griffins will wrap up a three-in-three in Texas tonight when they face the San Antonio Rampage at the AT&T Center at 5 p.m. EST.
