ALMQUIST TO DETROIT, COREAU TO TOLEDO

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday recalled defenseman Adam Almquist from the Grand Rapids Griffins and reassigned goaltender Jared Coreau from the Griffins to the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye.

Almquist, 23, ranks second on the Griffins in scoring with 45 points (4-41—45) and 52 PIM in 60 contests. The 5-foot-11, 173-pound blueliner ranks third among AHL defensemen in scoring and ties for third in the league in assists. A native of Huskvarna, Sweden, Almquist became the 135th Griffins alumnus to play in the NHL when he made his debut with Detroit on Nov. 4 at Winnipeg. Detroit’s 7th choice (210th overall) in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Almquist subsequently notched his first NHL goal on Nov. 7 versus Dallas.

The Red Wings will host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., when Almquist will be available to play.

Coreau, 22, has made five appearances with Grand Rapids in his first professional season and has posted a 0-4-0 record, a 4.39 goals against average and a 0.873 save percentage. The 6-foot-4, 208-pound goaltender has also appeared in 17 matches with the Walleye, registering a 1-11-4 record, a 4.20 GAA and 0.872 save percentage.

Prior to being signed to a three-year entry-level contract by Detroit last April, Coreau spent three seasons with Northern Michigan University, where he posted a 15-19-4 record, a 2.70 GAA, a 0.919 save percentage and one shutout after starting in all 38 games during his junior year.

The Griffins will play consecutive road games against the Iowa Wild on Friday (8:05 p.m. EDT) and Saturday (2:05 p.m. EDT) before traveling to Allstate Arena for a match against the Chicago Wolves on Sunday (4 p.m. EDT).
