He went on to tally his first NHL goal, which proved to be the game-winner, in a 1-0 shutout of the Washington Capitals at Joe Louis Arena on Nov. 10. Detroit’s fourth choice (110th overall) in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Athanasiou has played in six games with the Wings since being recalled earlier this month.

In his first full campaign with the team during 2014-15, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound center earned 32 points (16-16—32), 25 penalty minutes and a plus-17 rating in 55 regular season games, ranking among Griffins leaders in goals (4th), plus/minus (T6th) and shooting percentage (13.7%, 5th). He also tied for fifth in scoring for Grand Rapids during the 2015 Calder Cup Playoffs with nine points (5-4—9) in 16 games.
