Fourth Season of Affiliation Begins Tuesday in Traverse City
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. Twenty players with Grand Rapids Griffins playing experience will be among the dozens of Detroit Red Wings stars, prospects and invitees who will take to the ice tomorrow for the start of Red Wings training camp at Centre ICE Arena in Traverse City, Mich.
Sixteen players who skated for the Griffins during the 2004-05 American Hockey League season are expected to be on hand, including goaltenders Joey MacDonald and Drew MacIntyre; defensemen Greg Amadio, Bryan Helmer, Niklas Kronwall, Brett Lebda, Derek Meech and Travis Richards; and forwards Darryl Bootland, Matt Ellis, Eric Himelfarb, Jiri Hudler, Todd Jackson, Tomas Kopecky, Eric Manlow and free agent invitee Blake Sloan.
Also participating in camp will be former Griffins forwards Donald MacLean, Mark Mowers and Jason Williams and defenseman Jamie Rivers, as well as several players who could spend time with Grand Rapids this season, including goaltender Jimmy Howard; defensemen Andy Delmore and Kyle Quincey; and forwards Valtteri Filppula, Kent McDonell and Ryan Oulahen.
Griffins head coach Greg Ireland and new assistant coach Jim Paek will assist the Red Wings coaching staff throughout the camp, which concludes this Saturday, Sept. 17. Grand Rapids enters its fourth season as Detroits primary affiliate, an agreement that will continue through at least the 2006-07 campaign.
The camp schedule for Tuesday through Thursday calls for three player groups to practice separately at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., with two of those groups scrimmaging at 11:15 a.m. Friday will feature practices by the third-place (3:30 p.m.) and second-place groups (7:15 p.m.) to bookend a 6 p.m. championship game, while the camp will culminate on Saturday with a Red vs. White game at 5 p.m.
The Griffins will commence their training camp next Friday, Sept. 23, and theyll open their 10th anniversary season by hosting the Milwaukee Admirals on Saturday, Oct. 8. Game time at Van Andel Arena is set for 7 p.m.
