Grand Rapids seizes home-ice advantage in the Western Conference Finals and sets franchise records for best playoff start (8-1) and consecutive games with a power play goal (7) with a 3-1 victory at San Jose in Game 1. California native Mitch Callahan, playing his first postseason game in his home state, scores early in the first to kick-start a 2-0 lead, and Jared Coreau makes 26 saves while backstopping a penalty killing unit that denies the Barracuda on all six of their opportunities. Current Griffin Tomas Tatar and alumnus Tomas Kopecky win silver with Slovakia at the IIHF World Championship, helping their country earn its first medal since 2003. The 21-year-old Tatar, the youngest player on Slovakia’s roster, tied for sixth in team scoring with five points (2-3—5) in 10 contests, while Kopecky led Slovakia with five goals.

Milwaukee nets two shorthanded goals – the most ever for an opponent at Van Andel Arena – and Pekka Rinne stops 41 of 42 shots to guide the Admirals to a 2-1 win and a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference Finals. While out-shooting the visitors 42-25, the Griffins out-gun them 20-7 during the second to tie a franchise record for shots in a playoff period, but Rinne’s 20 saves are the most ever for an opposing netminder during a playoff stanza.

Petr Schastlivy scores twice to lead Grand Rapids to its fifth consecutive road playoff win, a 4-1 victory at Cincinnati that stakes the Griffins to a 3-1 lead in the IHL Eastern Conference Finals.
