Griffins Flashback: May 10

Take a look back at this date in Griffins history.

May 10, 2016

Down 3-0 to Lake Erie in the Central Division Finals and trailing 4-1 in the waning moments of the second period, the Griffins score four goals over the game’s final 20:55 – capped off by Andreas Athanasiou’s game-winner with 1:55 remaining – to stun the Monsters 5-4. Jared Coreau sees his first action of the 2016 playoffs and is perfect with 16 saves in relief over the game’s final 26:29, enabling the Griffins’ comeback that improves their record when facing elimination at home to an incredible 6-0 since the beginning of their Calder Cup run in 2013. For the second straight game, Tomas Tatar notches two goals and an assist while Petr Mrazek and the Griffins earn a 7-0 shutout, this time at Toronto in Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinals. Mrazek makes 25 saves to become the first Griffin in history to record two playoff shutouts, much less consecutively, and backstops the team to its first-ever shutout win in Game 1 of a series. The Griffins win a road playoff game by a margin of more than three goals for just the second time ever, dating to a 10-1 win at Cincinnati in Game 3 of the IHL’s Eastern Conference Finals on March 19, 2000, and their 14 unanswered playoff goals shatter their previous record of 10 set from March 19-20, 2000.

Facing elimination in Game 5 of the IHL Eastern Conference Finals, the Griffins respond with a dominating 8-3 victory over Orlando. The eight goals are the most ever by the Griffins in a home playoff game and mark the most ever allowed by the Solar Bears in the postseason. Kip Miller ties a franchise playoff record with three assists in the second period, while Ed Patterson’s three helpers also tie the mark for most in a game. Mathieu Chouinard, making his first start since March 9, stops 28 shots for the win.
