Griffins Flashback: March 18

Take a look back at this date in Griffins history.

March 18, 2017
For the second straight night the top two teams in the Central Division require overtime, and once again the Griffins come out on top. Ben Street nets his team-high 23rd goal of the season with 1:11 remaining in the extra session to secure a 3-2 win at Chicago. Jared Coreau turns aside 37 shots while making his 100th regular season appearance in a Grand Rapids uniform, and the Griffins hit the 40-win plateau for the fifth consecutive season and the 14th time in the franchise’s 21-year history. Grand Rapids improves to 33 games over 0.500 for the first time in team history thanks to Donald MacLean’s league-high 52nd goal 2:59 into overtime, as the Griffins take a 4-3 win over Toronto. MacLean’s goal ties the Grand Rapids single-season pro hockey record (George Parker, 1950-51 IHL Rockets), while Bryan Helmer sets a new team record for defensemen with his 41st assist of the year. Jimmy Howard records his eighth straight win, tying Mike Fountain’s franchise record, while his teammates increase their AHL-high goal total to 283, breaking the team record of 279 set in 2000-01.

Former Griffin Tyler Moss makes 36 saves to backstop Edmonton to a 2-0 win at Van Andel Arena. Moss’ shutout is the fifth of his career against his old team, giving him two more than any other opposing netminder. The Griffins wear Slap Shot-inspired Charlestown Chiefs jerseys during the game, generating $11,725 for the ALS Association West Michigan Chapter during a post-game auction.
