Teemu Pulkkinen scores twice in his first AHL game since March 6 to provide an anticipated boost to the Griffins’ offense, but the team’s defensive breakdowns result in Grand Rapids dropping Game 1 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals by a 7-4 count at Toronto. The Griffins overcome a Marlies goal in the opening minute and an early 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead midway through the contest, before Toronto tallies a momentum-turning goal in the final moments of the second period to seize a 4-3 advantage that it does not relinquish. The Griffins ride a franchise-record 55-save performance by Petr Mrazek to a 2-1 double-overtime win at Abbotsford in Game 1 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals. Ryan Sproul ends the marathon at 19:26 of the fifth period when his long shot from the right boards deflects past Joni Ortio, concluding the third-longest game in franchise history. Grand Rapids sets a team playoff record with its sixth consecutive road victory, dating to Game 4 of the 2013 Western Conference Finals in Oklahoma City, while the end time of 2:01 a.m. EST is the latest ever for a Griffins game. Manitoba’s two shorthanded goals tie a record for a Griffins opponent, as the Moose knot the North Division Semifinals at two games apiece with a 4-1 win at Van Andel Arena. The Moose’s four goals eclipse their combined output from the first three games of the series and give them their first victory over Grand Rapids this season by a margin greater than one goal. Mike Fountain earns the Griffins’ first-ever road playoff shutout with 32 saves in a 3-0 win at Cleveland. Grand Rapids prevails 4-0 in the IHL Eastern Conference Semifinals for the first playoff sweep in franchise history.

West Michigan Hockey, Inc. and the International Hockey League announce plans to bring an expansion team to Grand Rapids in time for the 1996-97 hockey season.
