Take A Look Back - Matt Puempel
By the numbers
2 – Puempel finished second on the team in both goals (17) and points (39). Acquired by the Red Wings organization via a trade with the New York Rangers on Oct. 21, 2017, Puempel has consistently been a top point producer during his three seasons with the Griffins, ranking third on the club with 57 (23-34—57) in 2017-18 and tying for second in 2018-19 with 50 (24-26—50).
11 – The 6-foot-1, 205-pound winger racked up 16 points (8-8—16) during his career-high 11-game point streak that ran from Oct. 23-Nov. 15. Puempel’s 11-game run bettered his previous record of nine, which was set Jan. 12-Feb. 4, 2018, during his first season as a Griffin. He tied Valtteri Filppula (March 25-Nov. 3, 2006) and Glen Metropolit (Jan. 30-Feb. 21, 1999) for the sixth-longest point streak in team history.

23 – Puempel lit the lamp six times on the man advantage, which tied Evgeny Svechnikov for second on the team. This season’s loot brings Puempel’s total to 23 PPG as a Griffin and that ties Matthew Ford for ninth all time in Griffins history.
54 – On March 11 against Iowa, in what ended up being Grand Rapids’ final game before the season was suspended and then ultimately cancelled, Puempel scored the game-winning power play goal with 54 seconds remaining.
250 – Puempel’s goal at the 14:34 mark of the third period in a 5-1 win vs. Texas on Feb. 9 marked his second point of the game and the 250th of his AHL career.
301 – Puempel collected both of Grand Rapids’ hat tricks this season (Oct. 25 vs. MB and Jan. 5 at SA), which were also his first three-goal games in the AHL. His first hat trick came in what was his 301st AHL appearance. By comparison, Puempel logged his first NHL hat trick as a member of the New York Rangers on Dec. 29, 2016 at Arizona, in what was only his 64th NHL appearance.

400 – 2019-20 marked Puempel’s seventh season as a professional. He skated in his 400th pro game on Dec. 20 at Iowa. A first-round draft selection of the Ottawa Senators in 2011, Puempel has amassed 257 points (124-133—257) in 340 AHL games between Binghamton, Hartford and Grand Rapids, and 16 points (11-5—16) in 87 NHL appearances between Ottawa, New York Rangers and Detroit.
