Defenseman Kyle Wood was acquired by the Red Wings organization from Carolina on Dec. 12 and tallied six points in 35 games for Grand Rapids.

4 – Wood began 2019-20 – his fourth pro season – with the Charlotte Checkers, primary affiliate to the Carolina Hurricanes, posting five points (3-2—5) and 24 penalty minutes in 14 appearances.

12 – On Dec. 12, the Red Wings acquired Wood from the Hurricanes in exchange for defenseman Oliwer Kaski. At the time of the trade, Kaski, who was in his first season in North America, had notched five points (2-3—5) and 12 PIM in 19 games for Grand Rapids.

3 – Donning No. 36, Wood is only the third player in team history to wear that sweater, joining goaltenders Jake Paterson (2015-16) and Jordan Pearce (2008-13).

5 – Grand Rapids marks the fifth AHL team the Waterloo, Ontario native has logged ice time for since debuting with the Springfield Falcons on April 16, 2016. Wood has also spent time with the Tucson Roadrunners and San Jose Barracuda. He made his first Griffins appearance a day after being traded, finishing with a +1 rating in his new team’s 6-5 come-from-behind overtime victory at Bakersfield.

7 –Wood had faced off against the Griffins seven times prior to the trade, including three with the Roadrunners in 2017-18 and four with San Jose in 2018-19. He totaled three points (1-2—3), a plus-six rating and two PIM in those seven contests.

7 – Wood picked up his first point as a Griffin in his seventh game, assisting on Matthew Ford’s second-period tally on Dec. 28 in a 3-2 win at Milwaukee. In an important divisional matchup at Chicago on Feb. 20, Wood scored his first goal in a Griffins uniform during the third period of a 3-2 win and was named the game’s third star.

35 – Since joining the Griffins, Wood was a consistent presence on the ice as he suited up in 35 of the team’s final 37 games of the season.

100/200 – The 6-foot-5, 235-pound blueliner achieved his 100th AHL point while assisting on Max McCormick’s second-period goal in Charlotte’s 4-3 home overtime loss to Springfield on Nov. 9. His 200th AHL appearance came on Dec. 6 at Rochester in what was his penultimate game with Charlotte.

236 – A former third-round selection in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft by the Colorado Avalanche, Wood has played in 236 career AHL contests, totaling 108 points (27-81—108) and 113 PIM. During his rookie campaign with Tucson in 2016-17, he established a career-high 43 points (14-29—43) and earned a spot on the AHL All-Rookie Team as well as a selection to play in the AHL All-Star Classic.
