by the numbers
2 – An alternate captain, McIlrath logged a season-high two assists in Grand Rapids’ 8-5 season-opening win at Chicago on Oct. 5. It marked the fifth time in his Griffins career the physical defenseman netted a multi-point game.
3 – Had the season not been abbreviated, McIlrath likely would have achieved 400 AHL games as he sits just three shy of the milestone. The 28-year-old made his AHL debut with the Connecticut Whale on April 9, 2011 at Bridgeport, and has also seen action with Hartford and Springfield. McIlrath shows 82 points (21-61—82), a plus-23 rating and 833 penalty minutes in the AHL.
13 – McIlrath was one of 13 players overall and one of seven defensemen to log ice time for both Grand Rapids and Detroit in 2019-20.
16 – McIlrath skated in 16 games for the Red Wings from Nov. 6-Dec. 10 and averaged 14:49 of ice time. His season debut on Nov. 6 came at Madison Square Garden against the New York Rangers, who drafted McIlrath 10th overall in 2010. McIlrath’s 16 appearances were his most NHL contests in a single season since suiting up 34 times for the Rangers in 2015-16.
73 – The 6-foot-4, 235-pound defenseman’s 73 penalty minutes were the most among Griffins’ blueliners and ranked second overall on the roster behind Givani Smith’s 75. Seventy-three PIM tied for 14th among AHL defensemen.
193 – McIlrath has skated in 193 games with the Griffins since the Red Wings acquired him from Florida at the trade deadline in 2017. He has posted 39 points (8-31—39), a plus-13 rating and 332 PIM in a Grand Rapids uniform and helped the club claim the 2017 Calder Cup.
332 – McIlrath has accumulated 332 PIM during his time as a Griffin. During his first two full seasons in West Michigan in 2017-18 and 2018-19, he led the team in PIM with 119 and 98, respectively, before his 73 this season finished second.
463 – The Winnipeg, Manitoba native played in his 450th pro game on Feb. 8 vs. Texas. He’s totaled 463 tilts as a pro, with 397 of those coming in the AHL and 66 in the NHL.
